Polly Vandersma
I've Heard The Mermaids Singing, the DVD [NTSC version] just came out last week, and last night getting it was a real treat! Another one of my favourite films of all time [I think I have like... 3!]. A Canadian independent flick directed by
Patricia Rozema that came out in the late 80's [and the fashion to prove it, too!]... About a girl-Friday who's "organizationally impaired", getting her first full-time job at age 31... The lovely
Sheila McCarthy plays
Polly, a bubble-brain who thinks too much [or too little], and an under-achiever who ponders about life, hmm, or thinking about the everyday stuff like being able to fly like Superman, and the ability to like uh, walk on water, etc...
Also from the movie, it was my first time being exposed to Léo Delibes' "Viens, Mallika", from the opera Lakmé! A gorgeous duet indeed. The 'painting' from the movie was outlandishly magical... You'll love the ending as the final credits roll...
I can totally relate to Polly. "Isn't life the strangest thing you've ever seen?" Yeeeeup!
